Los Guerreros: Elegguá, Ogún, Ochosi and Osun, the Warriors of Santería
In Cuban Santería, many people begin their religious life with the same first step: they "receive the Guerreros." Before any crowning, and often together with the first elekes, a padrino, madrina or Babalawo hands the new godchild four orishas who will walk with them from that day on: Elegguá, Ogún, Ochosi and Osun, the Warriors. They guard the door of the house, open and clear the roads, defend against enemies and watch over the head of their owner. This guide explains who the Guerreros are, what receiving them means, what each one looks like, where they live in the home, how they are attended, and what to know when you shop for their tools.
